FAQ'S: suggested by Magnet students

What class should I take if I already have my computer science credit?

There are several options for this: if you want to continue on the computer science path, you can take AP Computer Science Principles. You could also take engineering. Occasionally, a few freshmen will take a different course, such as an extra math class, but this is more uncommon.

What math class will I take this year?

There is a basic course progression for math classes.

pre-algebra -> algebra 1
algebra 1 -> geometry
geometry -> algebra 2
algebra 2 -> precalculus

If you need a detailed explination:
If you took pre-algebra in 8th grade, you take algebra 1. If you took algebra 1 in 8th grade, you take geometry. If you took geometry in 8th grade, you take algebra 2. In the unlikely circumstance that you took algebra 2 in 8th grade, you take precalculus. You also can retake a previous math class if you struggled a lot with it last year.

How many community service hours do I need this school year?

You are required to complete 30 community service hours by the end of freshman year. (60 by sophmore year, and 90 by the time you graduate. If you get 120 hours before you graduate, you get a special cord at graduation.) You can start your hours over the summer, if you like. They are due at the beginning of May, so don't procastinate. Please check out this page to learn more about community service at AMHS, as wellas the AMHS counseling website for information about community service.

Is it hard to get all of the community service hours done?

No, the opportunities will present themselves to you throughout the year. Community service can be enjoyable too! Find an opportunity you are passionate about and you can make that your focus! Check out Volunteer Match to find an opportunity today! (Class of '26 STUCO president Zuriel recommends Lowcountry Orphan Relief.) Is the workload at Magnet manageable?

"As somebody who’s been in Magnet for almost a full school year, I would say that there is definitely a learning curve while transitioning to this school. Near the beginning of the year - especially if you do extracurricular activities like sports or instruments - the workload WILL keep you up until 11 or 12 at night. However, this amount of work is only temporary and once you get used to the groove of things here it gets much better. It doesn’t mean that there won’t be some parts of the year where you’ll be staying up for a while, especially around the midterms season." -Amaris Wint, '26

"The workload is manageable if you use your time wisely. I do multiple after school activities and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to do everything with the magnet workload, but I have learned how to manage my time and study strategies that have helped me get all my work done!" -Isa Jickling, '26

"Utilize study hall (VERY helpful), get your work done on time, if not early. Don’t procrastinate or slack off - when given the time in class, do your work. Have an agenda so you’re organized." Amelie Gilmore, '26

Which class is the biggest jump in difficulty compared to its middle school version?

The famous biology is probably the biggest difference between classes. It is known for being a tough course, but a lot of people really enjoy it. Geography is also a pretty big jump, especially if you are taking AP and haven't taken a challenging social studies class before.

Is it hard to learn where everything is around the school?

Not at all! The campus is really straightforward: you'll know where everything is in about a week. There are a lot of straight lines and the only classes in separate buildings are AP Human (in the library) and PE (in the gym).

How much homework is there per night?

This is a very common question with no good answer. The best answer is that it's very inconsistent. You may only have written homework some nights, but there will probably be studying every day. Some students say that they have an average of 30 minutes to 2 hours of written homework per night, not including studying. If you have further questions, check out this document.

Should I try and take harder classes to look better for college?

"While it can be helpful, if you overbook yourself (so to speak) then you won’t do as well in general. If you have too much stress and too many things that need to be done, then it’ll be harder to complete everything, especially to the best of your ability." -Kate Selvitelli '26

In other words, you have to find a balance between taking the hardest classes and succeeding in the classes you're taking. Take that into account when planning classes for this year, and future years as well.

What is Magnet's interaction with SOA (School of the Arts?)

Magnet and SOA share a campus - you will probably see SOA students very often. We also share buses. Another big interaction is that freshman PE classes are a mix between Magnet and SOA students. SOA students may also be on Magnet sports teams, while Magnet students can try out for SOA plays (at least in the past). Magnet and SOA also share a library.

What are the required freshman classes?

- You will take English 1 as a freshman, EVEN IF YOU HAVE TAKEN IT PREVIOUSLY.

- PE is required for all freshmen

- a math class

- biology (or chemistry, if you have previously completed biology)

- a world language (Spanish 1, 2, or 3 or French 1, 2, or 3)

- either AP or Honors Human Geography

- study hall (IMPORTANT TO HAVE IN YOUR SCHEDULE)

- either computer or engineering (or something else, with special permission)

What is the Magnet dress code like?

- You can look at the official CCSD dress code here. Some important things to remember about the dress code is that you must be wearing your school ID at all times, which will be given to you within a few weeks of the first day of school. You also must wear your PE shirt every PE class, which you will also receive within a few weeks of the first day of school. Otherwise, the AMHS dress code is not very strict and there are no official uniforms students must wear.

How does the A and B day schedule work at AMHS?

- Each class at AMHS is 90 minutes long. There are no skinnys or semester classes (with the exception of a few in senior year). Basically, you will have four classes per day that will alternate every day. For example, if Monday is an A day, then Tuesday is a B day, and Wednesday is an A day again, etc. If there is a day with no school, the schedule will be pushed back (ie you will never have two A days in a row with no B day in between). All freshmen have the same study hall, which is 3B.
